Cobb County is experiencing tremendous growth, with projections estimating an increase of nearly 200,000 residents over the next 30 years. While this growth presents exciting opportunities, it also brings challenges that demand smart investments and forward-thinking solutions.
The current transportation system is already beyond capacity, leading to significant congestion and delays throughout the county. Additionally, post-COVID transportation patterns have resulted in all-day congestion, not just during traditional rush hours.
Investing in public transit is crucial. Transit provides a remarkable 5 to 1 return on investment for taxpayers according to the American Public Transportation Association.
And Cobb residents are ready for change. Data consistently shows that the more voters learn about transportation funding and the Mobility SPLOST (MSPLOST), the more likely they are to support it.
What Cobb County Voters Want to Know
MSPLOST stands for Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It’s a one-percent sales tax that will fund projects to fix traffic, improve public transit, and upgrade roads and trails across Cobb County.
MSPLOST will fund a variety of transportation projects, including high-capacity transit additions, microtransit innovations, and transit-supportive infrastructure. These projects are designed to enhance connectivity and provide more transportation options across Cobb County.
All of the major improvements will be completed in the first 10 years.
MSPLOST is a one-penny sales tax dedicated to funding mobility improvements. This tax means that everyone who buys goods in Cobb County contributes to transit, including residents, businesses, commuters, and tourists. Increased transit funding from financial streams like the proposed MSPLOST also helps Cobb County secure matching funds, making the county more competitive for grants.
MSPLOST is designed to improve connectivity and access to jobs, educational institutions, parks, retail centers, and other key destinations across all areas of Cobb County. The MSPLOST would provide access to microtransit services throughout the county, ensuring improved mobility options for all residents.
As Cobb County continues to grow, the current transportation system may not meet the increased demand. MSPLOST aims to address current limitations by improving existing infrastructure and introducing new transit options to support the county's growth and economic development, ensuring long-term sustainability and expanding transit options to meet future needs.
Investing in transportation infrastructure can support local businesses by improving access, attracting new businesses, and boosting local commerce. This investment can also make it easier for employees to commute to their jobs. Enhanced transportation networks can potentially lead to higher property values and increased tax revenues, which can be reinvested into the community.
Election Day is November 5th, 2024. Early voting starts on October 15th at locations across Cobb County. Make sure to vote YES and help us build a better future for our community!
